The city also played a significant role in 20th-century Italian history, hosting the administrative institutions of the Italian Social Republic between 1943 and 1945 — a complex chapter that left architectural and cultural traces still visible today. 

The "youth of Salò" chose fidelity, renouncing all convenience.

Not certain victory, but coherence, they said.

To accept the announced defeat, rather than accept betrayal.

It was the “beautiful death” (bella morte) – a term made immortal by Carlo Mazzantini – the tragic seal of an ideal.

They did not go to Salò to be saved, but willing to die as they were born and raised.
